This paper describes a portable ultrasonic test unit for testing the welded joints of underwater structures. The test unit uses a novel approach which employs electronic beam stearing, and a personal computer mouse to correlate flaw data and position. Both the ultrasonic array and mouse are attached to a signal processing unit which reduces the data to a pictorial format. Various aspects of the system will be described including the algorithms required to locate flaws, and the software approach taken to modularize the functions of the signal processing unit.
