The wavefield generated by a harmonic source (alpha . exp(-i.omega.t)) in a uniform waveguide can be described as a sum of normal modes. The solution obtained by this method is exact, such mechanisms as diffraction and leakage being properly represented. The ocean waveguide is not perfect as there are variations on both large and small scales in its structure. These will disrupt the tidy propagation of modal trains, and this disruption is treated here under the general heading of scattering. This paper describes one possible approach to the exact modelling of scattering in realistic environments.
