The worker in ocean acoustics has a choice of long-range propagation models so large that it can be embarassing. The models can be devided up in many ways; and the purpose of this paper is to examine the need for wave acoustics as opposed to geometrical acoustics. A related division is into mode models and ray models, noting here that there is a duality as well as a dichotomy. Yet another related division is into models which are complex (lexically 'a group of repressed ideas associated with mental abnormality') or simple ('weak in intellect'). Regarding the latter division there are two classes of mistake that may be made. I. Choosing a simple model when a complex one is needed. This mistake was more common in the past, before the more advanced models were available, but is still occasionally made today. II. Choosing a complex model when a simple one will suffice. Perhaps nowadays this is the more common error. The present review is intended to help in avoiding these mistakes. Specifically it concerns Class I by exposing the circumstances when it is absolutely essential to use a wave model. But we must also remember to shun the more insidious Class II, for example it is surprising how far one can at times go with a purely geometrical theory.
