A number of institutions and organizations have studied various aspects of geosynchronous communications platforms. One of the most definitive studies to date was conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) between 1979 and 1982. This study identified several areas that required further clarification. To address those areas, NASA competed and awarded a series of related studies in early to mid-1984. They selected two contractors, one of which was Ford Aerospace, to define communications payloads that would address some or all of the satellite adressable commercial traffic projected for the United States through the year 2008. Two other contractors were selected to develop platform 'bus' configurations that would accommodate and support the derived payloads. Ford Aerospace was also awarded on of those studies. This paper addresses the platform bus study currently being conducted by Ford Aerospace. It describes and briefly highlights the payloads; discusses the guidelines and assumptions underlying the study; addresses several of the specific issues posed by NASA; and discusses the platform bus configuration design drivers, the platform configurations we have developed, and their relationship with the planned NASA space infra-structure, namely the space station and supporting systems.
