The weight and reliability of some current avionics systems are discussed with respect to the special problems of Very Long Endurance Aircraft (VLEA). It is concluded that a mainly ground based flight control system has an important advantage because there are fewer restrictions on weight, power consumption and long-term reliability (the equipment can be serviced). Three such ground based radionavigation schemes are presented, two that use triangulation, and one that uses the Microwave Landing System (MLS) time-referenced scanning beam principle in reverse.
