The Hubble Space Telescope Electrical Power Subsystem is designed to supply all spacecraft power during the 15-year design life of the telescope with provisions for planned on-orbit maintenance every 5 years or at shorter intervals if required. In addition to automatic charge control, the power subsystem clears load faults and through use of the on-board computer and Safe Mode equipment, isolates major faults and maintains power to all critical loads during emergency conditions. To backup the autonomous capability, sufficient subsystem monitoring and controls are provided to enable ground control of solar array power, loads and battery charging and reconditioning.
