Electronic displays are being increasingly used in aircrafts for the presentation of information to the pilot and other aircrew such as navigator and flight engineer. A very effective way of presenting the pilot the most significant flight data while allowing him to pay attention to the outside words is represented by the Head-Up Display (HUD) architecture. In its most simple form a conventional HUD includes a symbol generator (monitor), collimating optics (L), and a combiner. The monitor is the source of display information, and is located at the focal plane of the lens L, so that the CRT's screen is imaged at infinity. The combiner is a beam splitter that folds the optical beam from the monitor so that it is superimposed on the outside world's image seen by the pilot.
