Shape optimal design techniques seem to have an important potential in the design of future satellites and spacecrafts. We give examples of thermal diffusers and radiators for communication satellites. Other design problems such as the positioning of sensors and actuators can also be studied and numerically solved by the speed method. More recently J.P. Zolesio again used that technique to show that a flexible plate can be stabilized by periodic control at the boundary position. This last result and the wide spread use of optimal design techniques in structural design strongly indicate that all this is likely to play a very important role in the stabilization and geometric control of large flexible space structures.
