This paper deals with the controllability of the Continuously Variable-Speed Transmission (CVT) which combines a Differentially Rotatable Machine (DRM) (a machine in which both the field and armature are rotatable) and a planetary gear train, and which is intended to be used for internal combustion engine/flywheel hybrid vehicles. The authors have devised a system called MEL-DEF2 and succeeded in realizing various operating modes of this system by interconnecting such modes. The authors have also ascertained that it is possible to control the output torque or speed while maintaining the engine speed almost constant. Through such studies, the authors have established the prospect that a system can be obtained which is capable of operating as required with efficient fuel combustion.
