Criteria for automatic clutch control for heavy goods vehicles are suggested and the performance of several published algorithms is assessed in relation to these criteria. A novel algorithm is proposed, which will offer significant advantages over conventional control systems, particularly for vehicles which operate with large variations in power to weight ratio and/or steep terrain. Techniques for the compensation of wear and variation in the clutch and its operating mechanism are also discussed.
