Proper use of energy storage can improve the fuel economy, performance, and other characteristics of a motor vehicle. Both flywheel and hydropneumatic accumulator systems appear viable, but there are a number of significant design factors which need to be considered when applying them. The paper discusses such factors, and compares the two alternatives, with information that should be helpful in determining which would be best for specific vehicle applications.
