The introduction of more stringent exhaust emission regulations and the requirements for precise fuel and ignition controls on internal combustion engines make electronic engine management systems essential. This paper demonstrates that by careful use of the correct microcomputer, a comprehensive engine system can be built simply and at low cost. The aim of the project was to design a full engine management system i.e. ignition control with knock feedback, fuel control with exhaust feedback, idle speed control and on-board diagnostics.
