The very first harness in a car was a 1.5 m long piece of wire running from the engine to the fascia panel to enable the engine to be stopped from the driving position by shorting the ignition. Since that time, wiring harnesses have grown more and more into the complex form we all know today. Because these harnesses are labour intensive and heavy, car makers need to curtail this growth if they are to remain competitive. The problems of high labour costs and weight implied by the increasing complexity and bulk of these harnesses, however, can be solved by the use of new technologies, such as: Ring Main Wiring Systems, Multiplex Systems and last but not least, BUS Systems.
