This paper describes and evaluates semicustom products and design techniques available to the automotive engineer. The way in which one semiconductor supplier has tackled the specific performance and reliability issues relating to automotive applications is discussed. The design process for both gate arrays and standard cells is detailed and the relative merits of both approaches is shown to give a full range of viable options for the designer.
