The field test in the Saarland has shown that a low-cost vehicle location system employing a magnetometer as heading sensor yields a navigation accuracy of better than 3 %. The transmission of position data via the radio reporting system FMS is sufficiently reliable. With the chosen transmission density, the position transmissions represent actually no additional loading of the radio channel. The vehicle location system described above is especially suited for large-scale missions of vehicle fleets, such as the rescue service, with respect to its performance capacity, radio transmission, updating and display capabilities.
