The concept of being able to know the precise whereabouts of land vehicles has been recognised for many years. Even in well mapped parts of the world the desire for accurate navigation of vehicles is becoming more widely appreciated. This paper describes how a company, well known in the area of ship navigation has developed and refined a product from its original use in the marine environment, to that of land navigation. The basic equipment is a dead reckoning system using a magnetic flux gate compass and distance input which are fed into a micro computer which calculates and displays the vehicle's position on a continuous basis.
