High performance strapdown northfinder require inertial quality sensors and appropriate means for filtering the useful earth-rate signal from angular disturbances. A theoretically dynamic exact method for large angular disturbance rejection has been derived. It represents a powerful but yet simple means for the extraction of the useful earth rate signal from the amenable measurement. By a multiposition measurement some systematic gyro errors (e.g. bias drift) could be ruled out. Others can be compensated if their corresponding amounts fall beyond affordable bounds. Any viable realization of the basic strapdown northfinder principle should exploit a combination of both procedures for error reduction as treated here.
