The protection of military aircraft on the ground against surreptitious access is a continual problem. The U.S. Air Force has initiated a program to develop portable electronic detection systems. As part of this program, a portable bistatic intruder-detection radar has been developed. This radar will detect all intruders, from a small creeping man to a high-speed vehicle, but will not alarm on nearby traffic or aircraft motion. The radar is also relatively insensitive to nuisance alarms from rain and small targets such as birds.
