The Machinery Control System (MCS) for the DD-963/CG-47 class ship consists of over 1500 cards housed in 36 feet of enclosures, interfacing with over 1800 sensors. These consoles monitor and control the ship's Electric Plant, Propulsion, Auxiliary, Damage, and Fuel Control equipment. They are manned by seven watch-standers and a set of procedure manuals are provided. These manuals, which describe various classes of alarm situations, their characteristics, possible causes and recommended actions, can be reduced to a set of 350 production rules, embedded in an Expert System. This Expert System can be used in two modes: 1) On-line advisory for the watchstanders and Engineering Watch Officer, and 2) A Trainer, Simulator System. In developing this Watchstander's Assistant, we ported the LISP source code from a Symbolics 3670 to an IBM PC and successfully executed it under Common LISP.
