The development of the technology of a.c. electric locos in India has kept pace with the overall development of operating requirements and the industrial capability in the country. Currently, this technology has been advanced to the level of being able to design and manufacture complete locomotive and most of its components and assemblies. After using four axle designs for the first 10 years, the Indian Railways switched over to six axle design to suit the local conditions. Even these designs are likely to be superseded during the eighties and nineties by higher horse power designs capable of working heavier trailing loads than hitherto. The six axle designs will continue, but locomotives may have three bogies to reduce lateral forces on the track. Four axle designs are likely to reappear for working with lower trailing loads and for passenger trains.
