Clearly, mechanical/hydraulic controls are being replaced on transportation vehicles by electronics as more complicated control actions are required which must be executed with higher precision. Commercial integrated circuits developed primarily for other applications have been adequate to these transportation applications. However, some future applications involving optimizing control algorithms, pattern recognition algorithms, etc., which must process large volumes of data and support real-time control actions can be expected to require high device operating speeds and large memories. This paper projects the nature of electronic devices which should become available for transportation use as a result of advanced development programs.
