There has been a need for a traction aid system for off-highway trucks that has the good cornering and torque characteristics of the standard differential and the good traction characteristics of the lock-up differential. A system that closely meets this need can be achieved by means of an electronic control system in conjunction with the standard differential. The electronic control senses wheel spin and applies the brake on the spinning wheel. Braking the spinning wheel, in addition to reducing wheel spin, increases the torque on the wheel with the better traction. Such a control has been designed and tested and is now in production.
