Among the projects presently being developed under the auspices of the European Space Agency (ESA) is the ESA Remote Sensing Satellite 1. (ERS-1). The major part of the payload for this satellite is the Active Microwave Instrumentation (AMI) which comprises a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and a three antenna, single polarisation, Wind Scatterometer (SCATT). The aspects of the calibration of the SCATT in the context of ERS-1 are those presented in this paper, although the general philosophy applies equally to any spaceborne scatterometer.
