This paper describes the techniques which are planned for the verification of performance of the ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar. It covers the hardware verification on the ground before launch as well as the in flight verification. Before looking at the verification techniques themselves the paper introduces the geophysical image quality parameters to be verified and describes the design stages to obtain the hardware requirements. As well as considering the actual verification methods to be employed, the paper explains the problems of finding suitable techniques and why some techniques are discarded.
