The Active Microwave Instrumentation for the ERS-1 remote sensing mission will consist of an imaging Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), with a spatial resolution of 30 m, and a Microwave Wind Scatterometer capable of determining sea surface wind speeds in the range 4 to 24 m/s. This paper describes the design philosophy, equipment configuration and intended operation of the Active Microwave Instrumentation package as an end to end radar system including ground imaging, calibration and data processing requirements.
