The purpose of the SERIES-X Project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a method proposed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for measuring the orbit of the TOPEX earth satellite with an accuracy of a few centimeters. This method involves measurements of the distance from TOPEX and various points on the ground to satellites of the Global Positioning System (GPS). The system is equally applicable to other satellites in low earth orbits, and to geodetic measurements as well. It is capable of measuring the positions of isolated stations, but its accuracy is greatly enhanced when it operates in a differential model - that is, measuring baselines. The demonstration is now complete and, on the whole, successful. During the past year we have made numerous measurements of baselines of various lengths; the results of some of those measurements are discussed below.
