Rockwell's Autonetics Marine Systems Division is translating the potential of the high precision ring laser gyro into the reality of the next generation inertial navigator for surface combatant ships. In developing the laser gyro navigator, Rockwell is applying the same technological resources and experience that have produced successful medium and high accuracy marine inertial navigators for the fleet. The Rockwell Ring Laser Gyro Navigator (RLGN) is designed for total compliance with current and projected military requirements, with growth potential of core elements for future subsurface application. The precision laser gyros and single three axis electro-magnetic accelerometer employed in the RLGN are specifically designed for low cost strapdown mechanization. An AN/UYK-44 Processor is used for autonomous and aided navigation operations. A flexible, modular, digital interface ties the RLGN to other shipboard systems and can be easily changed to accommodate all potential users. Low life cycle cost and producibility are stressed in the system design via the extensive use of standard electronic modules. This paper presents a technical description of the preproduction RLGN. Major components, key features and design emphasis areas are discussed.
