This paper addresses many of the basic engineering issues involved in reaching a 'harmony in sound' between car and driver and provides an overview of the inter-relationship - from a sound engineer's perspective - between the driver of a vehicle and his or her perception of the performance of that vehicle's sound system. Considerations include the acoustical characteristics of the car itself and many of the variables found in the car's components. Other factors which affect the acoustical signal heard by the car's occupants, as well as the known ergonomic and psychoacoustic factors which influence the perceived performance of a sound system in an automotive environment, are also considered.
