This paper reports on work in progress on a project to apply expert system technology to the integration of housekeeping subsystems on board a manned space station. These subsystems include the Environmental Control/Life Support Subsystem (EC/LSS), the Electrical Power Subsystem, and the Thermal Management Subsystem. The goal of the project for late 1983 and early 1984 was to investigate the application of expert systems to the EC/LSS. The result of this investigation is a prototype expert system, the Environmental Control Expert System in Space (ECESIS). We briefly describe the application domain, our approach to implementation, and the peculiarities of the domain that hamper the application of expert system technology.
