The design of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Block 5D-2 spacecraft incorporates extensive on-board autonomous redundancy control of the hardware and software as part of a program to ultimately achievefull autonomy. Improvements in reliability and extension of on-orbit life are achieved through automated management of spacecraft subsystems, such as the Electrical Power Subsystem. A new power management software function was developed to monitor and maintain optimal operational conditions. The current power management strategy consists of monitoring critical energy balance parameters for out-of-tolerance conditions that trigger operational changes ranging from battery charge rate adjustments to power load shedding. The power management software function was implemented in a highly modularized top-down approach permitting activation in multiple levels of increasing autonomy. A summary of recent on-orbit experience is presented.
