The challenge to place high powered equipment in space is not limited to just the new equipment and electrical system. All spacecraft system interfaces must be considered: the structure, electrical/electronics, propulsion, software, and the mission. Power generation and processing is essential for high-power high-voltage space system concepts. Key issues associated with the generation and processing of high power include weight and volume reduction of components and modules, and a reliable high repetition pulse power processor. To accomplish these goals capacitor energy density must be increased two times present capabilitiy and packaging must be reduced by a factor of 10 to 20 times for present commercial design. The packaging and system must be shielded against the natural and induced environment of space and the spacecraft.
