The NASA OAST Office of Space Energy Systems supports R and T for conversion storage, and management of electrical and thermal energy for space systems. Technical options which enable and significantly benefit the exploitation and exploration of space are identified and evaluated for applications ranging from near term to the next century. This paper summarizes recent technical progress in the areas of photovoltaics, chemical energy conversion and storage, thermal-to-electric conversion, power management and distribution, and thermal management.
