RCA Astro-Electronics is the prime contractor and manufacturer for two new communications satellite systems, GSTAR and Spacenet. The GSTAR program is for the GTE Satellite Corporation (GSTAR) and the Spacenet program is for the GTE Spacenet Company. Both systems are scheduled to start operation by mid-1984. RCA Astro-Electronics has developed, designed and successfully qualified nickel-hydrogen batteries for both programs. This paper describes both battery designs and summarizes their development and qualification test results. Each light-weight battery design with unique features contains 22 nickel-hydrogen battery cells, packaged in two identical modules. The (GSTAR and Spacenet) batteries use 30 ampere-hour and 40 ampere-hour nameplate capacity cells, respectively.
