Many of the management problems which exist in the transport industry arise because the prime activity is outside direct management control for large periods of time. The drivers of the vehicles jealously guard this independence from direct management control. However, the demands made upon the industry have changed. In recent years there has been a more 'professional' attitude towards transport management; it is now almost a respectable career. High transportation costs have precipitated this trend, requiring distribution to be more precise in cost allocation and cost responsibility. Combine the incentive arising from high costs with the enthusiasm of professional transport managers and the requests which result for more business information are a clear consequence. It is important to recognise that although the above comments establish that cost minimisation is a prime company objective, it is not the only goal. Apart from the legal operating restrictions, the transport industry provides a service to, and is constrained by, the wider production economy. Therefore, and as a consequence, distribution performance must be judged in accordance with these wider objectives. The speed of delivery and reliability of service add further dimensions to the management of cost optimisation. Transport has, like many other business, sought the aid of information systems based on computer technology.
