This paper describes the development of driver information systems in Audi cars during the last years. A short review is given starting with mechanical dashboards equipped with separate modules consisting of speedometer, tacho etc. In 7/82 an on-board check system was introduced in the Audi 100 (500 S). This system indicates the warning information by displaying a symbol on a projection screen. In autumn 1982 the first electronic instrument panel was introduced combined with an on-board check system with speech synthesis.
