The system operates by giving the driver guidance information as he approaches each junction on his journey. This information includes the number of the road an a compass bearing, indicating the direction to be followed. The driver is therefore provided with instructions, in a conventional format, sufficiently in advance of the junction to enable the appropriate action to be taken. The equipment is in two parts - Vehicle Units and Roadside Units. The Vehicle Unit consists of a simple drivers terminal, similar in size to a car radio, for data entry and display, and an aerial assembly which is connected to the terminal and mounted beneath the vehicle. The Roadside Units are mounted in small cabinets situated at appropriate points in the road network. Each unit comprises a microprocessor based information retrieval system which is connected to an inductive loop buried in the road surface. This loop is similar to those employed on vehicle detection and identification systems. Where there are a number of traffic lanes, separate loops and associated circuitry are provided for each lane. The route data for each junction is held locally at that junction, in compacted form to enable a vehicle at that point in the road network to be directed to any other node in the network by the quickest, possible route.
