This paper has described the changing role of the DOSS in the DOCS from its current operational role as a network planning element to that of a command and control element at the heart of the DOCS. The DOSS characteristics that suit this expanded role are; (1) access control from both local and remote DOSS Controller Consoles, (2) operational data base control and (3) distributed interprocessor communications. The proposed architecture for the future DOCS enhances the flexibility, interface uniformity and overall DOCS availability through the use of an Ethernet LAN within each DSCSOC, DCAOC and ACOC and through the internetting of these Ethernets by the use of ICPs. The DOCS internet provides for efficient operational control under normal conditions and for a smooth transition to use alternate DOCS elements in the case that DOCS elements fail.
