A microprocessor based system for long term data acquisition application is described. It designed specifically for year-long deployment in marine waters of up to 100 metres depth to collect hourly readings of seawater temperature. It features low maintenance, rapid deployment, low parts costs (less than Australian Dollar 200 single unit cost) and low power consumption (less than 6 Ah/year at 12 V). The system is readily modified for collecting other physical data (or to achieve higher accuracy or range) by changing the transducer and modifying the associated software or to sample at different rates.
