This paper provides an introduction to the use on in-the-cockpit airborne imagery interpretation in the tactical reconnaissance environment. Overcoming the single most critical short-fall in current capabilities, timeliness of essential combat information to the battle commander, is now possible with real-time and near real-time image display. This paper reviews current reconnaissance capabilities and the obstacles to timely execution of the reconnaissance cycle. A description of technology now available for presenting state-of-the-art tactical reconnaissance sensor imagery on existing cockpit displays follows. The paper describes various imagery interpretation and reporting capabilities for possible flight profiles, target types, sensor suites, and user requirements. The various modes, functions, and media available for airborne imagery interpretation and subsequent intelligence reporting are explored. A hypothetical mission is 'flown' from unit tasking, take-off and transit through aircraft recovery and subsequent imagery down-loading and processing for second and third phase intelligence reporting. Penetration, target acquisition and cockpit interpretation, first phase intelligence reporting from the aircraft, and finally, egress are covered in detail.
