Modern airborne sidelooking radar systems require narrow beamwidths and low sidelobes. By definition this requires a large aperture which in some cases can become a significant size as compared with the aircraft carrying it. Since many parts of the aircraft such as wings, nacelles, tanks, etc. are necessarily present in the near field of these antennas, the patterns become distorted. When designing a new radar system it is desirable to be able to know these distortion effects before any hardware is built. Our paper presents a technique for measuring antenna patterns in the presence of a near field disturbance. This was done by placing a field probe on an old aircraft fuselage and measuring amplitude and phase data at various points along the length of the proposed antenna aperture. This data was stored in a computer and then converted to an antenna pattern by using an FFT process and applying the correct weighting function to each of the points. A random process was also introduced to simulate manufacturing tolerance errors.
