An initial feasibility study into bus detection and route number recognition has been described, using model-based and conventional vision processing techniques. We are encouraged by the results, particularly the zero false alarm rate and the effective 100 % separation of bus from non-bus images. However further work needs to be done, in order to extend the results to the majority of viewing conditions and the full range of bus types.
