Several technologies have developed, during the past decade, into speciality desciplines that will affect practically all future military electronic systems. Application of VLSI, digital filtering, and digital signal processing techniques have made possible top-down integration of communication, navigation, and identification (CNI) functions with potential weight, power, and size savings greater than 50 percent. These technology applications have resulted in what can be termed COMPLEXITY LEVERAGE i.e., while functional complexity has increased, the physical complexity (related to parts count) has decreased. CNI Complexity Leverage offers three major advantages. It allows an integrated system to accept new waveforms without major hardware renovation. New signals or waveforms can be accomodated by reprogramming the system, a process largely accomplished by software. Secondly it permits an integrated ratio system to overcome electronic warfare obstacles during operation. Thirdly, it permits signal processing in the digital domain where full advantage can be taken of sophisticated computer hardware and programming techniques.
