A description of the evolutionary process of Stores Management Systems over the last 20 years is presented. The problems arising out of the proliferation of NATO's current stores and aircraft in terms of their low level of interoperability and the soaring integration coasts of new weapons are outlined. Through the MIL-STD-1760/STANAG 3837AA standardization effort, these problems should be progressively eliminated as stores with 'standard' interface are introduced into service. The three major elements of MIL-STD-1760 are noted, and the importance and outline content of the proposed logical definition are described. The paper will then deal with the most recent development of a truly 'Advanced Interoperable Stores Management System' (AISMS). The AISMS described encompasses all aspects of aircraft weapon management, including the all-embracing management of a flexible combination of the majority of NATO's weapons, including those stores with both 'standard' (MIL-STD-1760) and 'existing' interfaces.
