The development and verification of advanced signal processing for high resolution airport ground control radars are described. The basic system and corresponding processing requirements, particularly for target extraction and false alarm control in an extended or distributed scatterer target environment, are discussed. A wideband data acquisition system and the results from a target and clutter measurements program designed to collect data for verification of the processing are presented. Novel constant false alarm control and binary-pattern-based target extraction algorithms are postulated. Verification results demonstrate that the unique processing will solve the particular problems of airport ground control radar.
