This paper presents the formulation of a coupled circuit model for the linear synchronous machine (LSM) and the derivation of the non-linear state variable equations which describe the electrical and mechanical behavior of the linear synchronous motor. A force angle, beta, is defined for steady state and transient operation and techniques to control beta by controlling the voltage magnitude are presented. The control scheme provides system damping and operation at values of beta that are normally unstable. Computational results are presented for uncontrolled and controlled operation of a model.
