In recent years the three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor has continually gained in importance as a traction motor for electric and diesel-electric tractive units. This development is due to the breathtaking advances made in semiconductor technology which have provided increasingly better methods and devices for steplessly controlling the speed of this type of electrical machine. As is known, stepless speed control of an induction machine requires a three-phase supply system of infinitely variable frequency and voltage. Two types of converters are currently available for converting the voltage of the power source - be it a DC or AC line or a diesel generator - into such a three-phase system, operating under the harsh conditions of railway service: 1. The voltage link converter using a PWM inverter as a machine-side unit. 2. The current link converter using a phase-sequence commutated inverter.
