Translation insensitive (TI) heterodyne interferometers have the property that a wavefront may be sampled and compared (in phase) at two arbitrary points on a plane without requiring precision control on the reference feed paths to the heterodyne detectors. Several different principles may be employed, some of which exploit nonlinear phase conjugation. The wavefront may be extracted either from pupil planes or focal planes with appropriate changes in the instrumentation.
