In this paper the control theoretic problem associated with the automatic transmission for a road vehicle is discussed. A differential game model for vehicle control is put forward and analyzed; our approach then leads to a simple synthesis of the 'feedback' strategy for the optimal selection of the transmission ratio of the (automatic) gearbox.
