An application of Kalman filtering techniques to a strapdown inertial attitude reference system for the purpose of obtaining knowledge of relative attitude, i.e. alignment, between two sets of coordinate axes is described. The origins of the two sets of axes may be situated at locations remote from one another in a moving vehicle. We have identified requirements for accurate alignment in relation to air, sea and ground launched missiles. This paper describes the formulation and testing via computer simulation of an extended Kalman filter for this purpose with emphasis on the particular problems associated with the shipborn application.
