This article describes traction power system concepts including traction power substations and gap breaker stations locations, function and features of primary power source, a typical single line diagram, function and features of traction power substation/gap breaker station equipment. This article also covers function and features of contact rail and protective coverboard, and traction power installation hardware including power and control cables, raceways, pull boxes, manholes, cable adapters, emergency trip station, and DC disconnect switches. In conclusion, a system interface list shows how the traction power system interfaces with other elements of a typical transit system.
